About Us
Founded in 2004, Sierra Energy is a utility-scale clean energy company headquartered in Davis, California that is developing a commercial gasification process at the Renewable Energy Test Center (RETC) at McClellan Business Park in Sacramento, California.
Sierra’s process, known as FASTOX™, not only enhances and improves the iron-making process but allows blast furnaces to be retrofitted into thermal gasifiers that can convert solid hydrocarbon fuels such as municipal solid waste (MSW), coal, biomass, and oil shale and oil sands into a syngas capable of creating clean energy at a scale over 20 times larger than our nearest competitor. Sierra’s FASTOX™ process is the most scalable, versatile, and cost-effective gasification system today.
Sierra’s advantage is based on two primary differentiators: the maturity and scalability of the blast furnace design which has been used and improved for many centuries (and which allows Sierra to easily retrofit existing blast furnaces with its FASTOX™ technology), and its remarkable economics — there simply is nothing else with a similar rate of return on investment.
Because of the significant number of currently idled blast furnaces in the U.S. and abroad, Sierra can deploy its FASTOX system quickly and with minimal capital cost, leveraging existing assets and infrastructure. Sierra Energy’s FASTOX™ system will bring new life to struggling iron-making communities while providing the means of turning a wide variety of feedstocks into the clean and renewable energy our society needs.
Sierra’s utility-scale waste-to-energy gasification system has been patented in 34 countries and has been validated by multiple industry-leading blast furnace and renewable energy experts.
